Engineering / flow and capacity

Size the operating range, not just the peak flow.

A nameplate capacity does not tell you whether a sterilizer fits your product or operating pattern. Nominal throughput, minimum flow and planned turndown affect heating, holding and downstream balance. State whether a flow value is by mass or volume and include the product density where needed.

Configuration priorities

What to specify for this duty.

01

Define the full flow range

Include normal production, the slowest intended operation and any changing product conditions. Describe batch feeding, upstream interruptions and buffer availability. The control system and product path need a viable operating envelope rather than a single maximum throughput figure.

02

Link flow to the thermal process

Heating area, holding-path geometry and measured flow are connected. Minimum residence time is not established by dividing volume by an assumed production rate alone. Include the process basis and the product flow behaviour so the correct assessment can be made.

03

Check utilities and downstream demand

Provide inlet and outlet temperatures, steam or hot-water conditions and cooling availability. The required pump pressure also depends on the complete path. Share filler consumption and transfer conditions to avoid sizing a thermal unit that cannot operate consistently with the rest of the line.

A useful first enquiry

Bring the product.
We’ll discuss the equipment.

You do not need every value to start. Share what is known and identify what needs review. A clear product brief helps define configuration, included modules and the decisions that affect the quotation.

  • Nominal and minimum flow with units
  • Density, viscosity and product range
  • Inlet, treatment and outlet conditions
  • Filler demand, utilities and operating pattern

Practical answers

Before you specify.

Can you quote a fixed capacity immediately?

An initial target is useful, but the viable capacity must be confirmed against the product and thermal duty.

Can I run at half the design flow?

Turndown is configuration-specific. Heating control, holding, measurement, pumping and aseptic interfaces need review before confirming it.

Discuss your equipment

From product requirements to a defined scope.

Send your product, target flow and packaging needs. The equipment quotation should identify what is included, what connects to your existing line and which process values still need confirmation.
